Teeth Whitening Q & A
Is teeth whitening safe?
Professional teeth whitening is a safe process under the care of an experienced dentist. For the most part, there is little risk of any serious side effects. Many adults experience mild tooth sensitivity during or after whitening treatments, but that returns to normal in a few days.
What are the advantages of professional whitening treatments?
Although over-the-counter bleaching products may yield some results, professional teeth whitening procedures are the most effective way to enhance your smile. Dr. Fait offers patients the convenience of in-office whitening or a take-home system. Both options contain a higher concentration of bleaching agent (usually peroxide) than whitening kits sold at the store.
The in-office bleaching treatment Dr. Fait offers is called Zoom!®, a fast, safe way to whiten your teeth in just one visit. Zoom! uses the latest dental technology and proven chemical formulas to whiten tooth enamel. It has the highest amount of hydrogen peroxide whitening ingredient available in a gel. Dr. Fait applies that gel to your teeth, and then he uses a specialized light to activate the gel, giving you the fastest, most effective teeth whitening experience in about an hour.
The take-home system is another convenient way to bleach your teeth over a few days and requires just two office visits. At the first one, Dr. Fait takes impressions of your teeth, so he can make custom plastic whitening trays. When the trays are ready, he’ll make sure they fit correctly and explain the whitening kit to you. You’ll have everything you need to whiten your teeth conveniently at home, often overnight.
Does teeth whitening work on all teeth?
Teeth whitening doesn’t work on all teeth, and even professional whiteners cannot correct all types of discoloration. When you consult Dr. Fait, he advises you which type of whitening or other cosmetic dental procedure will give you the best results. Teeth whitening works best on yellow teeth, but not as well on brown teeth.
Whitening treatments do not work on crowns, veneers, or fillings either. Teeth discolored as a result of injury, or some types of medications do not always respond well. Dr. Fait can explain other options for brightening your teeth if whitening isn’t an option.
